Phffft!

As some of you may or may not know The Jack Lemmon Film Collection recently came out on DVD. Among the titles is a film called Phffft! (It must have been interesting requesting a ticket to see this movie back in the day). I've literally been dying to see this film. When it came on TCM a few months ago, I got to see about the first 10 minutes of it before I had to leave for work. I was excited to finally be able to finish it. Also I really enjoyed Lemmon's other film with Judy Holliday, It Should Happen to You! so I thought I would enjoy their second on-screen efforts. I was wrong.

I didn't think it was possible to drain the chemistry out of a pairing. I always thought that chemistry is chemistry, you either have it or you don't. I didn't realize that a good script could actually factor into whether two people click or not. Needless to say, I didn't like Phffft! I thought it was quite boring which was disappointing since I was so looking forward to it. Jack Lemmon has the incrediable talent of being able to make just about anything work. He had such a presence and charisma in all of his roles, but even he couldn't save this movie for me.

Perhaps it's because Jack Lemmon and Judy Holliday spent such little time actually together that I couldn't get into it. There were some nice flashbacks to show how their relationship started, but other than that it was a lot of sillyness with each of them venturing out in the world, dating and adjusting to the single life.

I'm extremely biased, but I really don't like Kim Novak. Never have, never will. I just can't stand her. She's on the top of my list of actresses I don't like, right up there with Myrna Loy and Irene Dunne. That probably clouded my enjoyment of this film as well.

I don't know. I'm just disappointed. :(

When I saw Phffft! I thought it was a cute film but I didn't like it as much as It Should Happen to You!. I didn't think it was awful though. I'm not a fan of Kim Novak either. Now I've seen her in a couple things where I thought she did a decent job like Vertigo, The Man With the Golden Arm, and Kiss Me, Stupid, but that's only because I thought the other performances helped her along, except in Kiss Me, Stupid I thought she was perfect in that role.

Ahh Myrna Loy and Irene Dunne! I love both of them! Oh well. We can't love them all, can we? LOL!
